Overview
With dramatic panoramic vistas over Bondi Beach, this thoroughfare was upgraded to match its iconic location.
Rising from the crashing blue waves, Notts Avenue serves as the main conduit between Bondi Beach and the world-renowned coastal walk. As part of Waverley Council’s proposed ‘Walking Strategy’ to improve pedestrian access to popular destinations throughout the LGA, the streetscape was updated to improve the safety and amenity for residents, visitors and the one million annual users of the coastal walk.
Working collaboratively with Council, Tract provided expertise, advocating for a significant, cohesive, high-quality public domain that celebrates the coastal setting whilst redefining the street as a welcoming, comfortable setting.
Working from the bedrock up, investigations were undertaken to ensure the team was well informed of the site’s geotechnical integrity, strata formation, water management, coastal erosion impacts, local flora and fauna communities, heritage and ecological values.
With creative thinking and appreciation of technical challenges, we devised a landscape that was more than a “Shared Zone”; Notts Avenue was affectionately re-branded as “Notts Lookout” by the design team.
Our highly skilled landscape architects led a proactive team to ensure a successful conversion of a depleting street profile and environment into a welcoming, open public domain capable of hosting pedestrian volumes with dignity and style, whilst allowing the safe movement of vehicles to, from and within the space.
The final form is simple in its appearance, belying the complex underground infrastructure. As part of the broader urban environment, the experience of Notts Avenue no longer presents itself as an asphalt road, but a neatly interwoven extension of the coastal environment and a celebration of Bondi.
