The Victory Road site is a former 30-hectare landfill in Clayton South that has been rehabilitated into a parkland for Kingston City Council.
Cleanaway is managing and overseeing the rehabilitation and post-closure works of several landfill sites within the Clayton area. Tract was engaged to revise the documentation for this project to provide a design solution that was able to be implemented with difficult site constraints and changing Council parameters.
This site on the corner of Victory Road and Clayton Roads will expand Kingston’s Green Wedge -‘Chain of Parks’ initiative, to provide a habitat corridor and urban forest across a range of rehabilitated sites in the area.
A detailed documentation and review phase was undertaken with EPG Environmental Consultants, Golder/WSP capping engineers and Cleanaway to ensure the proposed outcome would not have any adverse effect to the capping infrastructure and that the landscape design proposed would adapt and thrive into the future.
The site featured the planting of hundreds of trees within a specialised mounded planting beds to ensure passive irrigation and adequate soil volume for long-term viability of trees and future canopy cover. To complement the tree planting, thousands of shrubs and grasses have been planted throughout the open space. 3km of gravel path network has been created within the reserve to connect to the wider corridor and to access the feature lookout area, fenced off-leash dog park, fitness nodes and picnic tables throughout the reserve.
Access to the parkland is via two carparks located on the Southern and Northern edges, with fully accessible DDA grade path network throughout. The project provides local habitat for flora and fauna, increased canopy along the shared path network and a large open grass areas for the community to enjoy that under most circumstances would be a privately owned and be a closed parcel of land for the post-closure and capping period of 30+ years.
This project showcases the opportunity that a landscape intervention can have within the Extractive, Waste and Rehabilitation sector.
