Recognised as the Oasis in the Outback, Mount Isa is located in Queensland’s vast North West. It’s strategic location presents itself as a regional gateway with a unique topography, climate and mining history.

The Mount Isa CBD Master Plan had a focus on catalysing economic activity and guiding investment opportunities for the CBD in the broader regional context.

The Master Plan was designed to solve specific local problems and take advantage of unique opportunities. This involved mapping out aspirations for the CBD that were responsive to the local conditions through a collaborative approach with community stakeholders. This process aimed to attract change and renewal into the CBD by establishing technically robust outputs with a sense of local ownership over the outcomes.

Leveraging catalyst sites and key partnerships within CBD precincts was a key action to yield urban renewal in the city. Permeability between the precincts was also critical to provide the CBD with a sense of structure and hierarchy.

The diversification of land uses established the opportunity for the CBD to thrive as a vibrant and attractive centre in response to economic and community expectations. A focus on enhancing connections to and within the CBD was essential to ensure Mount Isa’s future vitality.

Our role in this project was largely focused on strategic planning, placemaking, and planning scheme interpretation. This project demonstrates our ability to establish strong relationships and work remotely with regional Councils, and deeply understand the challenges of development in regional communities.
