Tract were engaged by the City of Moreton Bay to develop the Moreton Bay “Your Shopfront Improvement Guideline” as an addition to a suite of guideline documents already released by Council. This “Your Shopfront Improvement Guideline” document is intended for use by businesses in the region’s Centres, in order to help them make small to medium improvements to the exterior of their business. It was envisaged that these improvements would encourage activation of commercial centres and high streets through urban design.
Tract’s urban design team were engaged for this project to provide expert recommendations for urban design interventions to include in the Shopfront Guidelines that would elevate the urban character of the region. The urban design team of Tract have particular expertise in the visual improvement of the public realm and activating public spaces to increase their safety and attractiveness.
The development of “Your Shopfront Improvement Guideline” provides specific guidance to address the real and observable difficulties that businesses face in the Moreton Bay region. Tract conducted an extensive review of the regional centres of Moreton Bay and identified areas in which businesses experienced significant activation and patronage, as well as areas that were typically less popular.
The guideline incorporates a wide range of creative urban design interventions in order to make the document accessible and desirable to the region’s business owners and operators. The key to the guideline’s success is providing a path to improve street appeal for businesses in cost-effective ways, that is applicable to a wide variety of shopfronts, business types, and locations. Innovative and effective ideas are communicated with clear, straightforward language, relying on descriptive graphics and imagery.
Through stakeholder consultation and collaboration with urban design, landscape architecture, and town planning disciplines within the Tract company, “Your Shopfront Improvement Guideline” was developed and released to the public. The stakeholder consultation undertaken for this project involved working closely with key representatives of Moreton Bay Council departments to identify the priorities and expectations of Council and establish key areas of concern.
