Commissioned by the City of Holdfast Bay and delivered in collaboration with Tonkin and Outside Ideas, Tract commenced work in 2022 to revitalise the 800-metre precinct stretching from Brighton Road to Moseley Square. Building upon the street’s rich heritage and coastal character, the project has transformed a tired and vehicle-dominated corridor into a contemporary civic destination that de clutters the public realm, prioritises pedestrian experience, improves DDA access and promotes place activation.

Working closely with project partners, Tract reviewed and refined the endorsed masterplan to establish a compelling vision for Jetty Road’s future. The resulting design successfully secured $40 million in combined Federal and Local Government funding, enabling the delivery of this important beach side public realm renewal project.

The completed project introduces a seamless, high-quality streetscape that enhances connectivity, supports local business and provides an inviting environment for tourists, residents and visitors alike.

Early Concept Options

Key improvements:

  • De cluttering the public realm and introduction of a consistent and bespoke furniture suite, paving palette and planting palette to improve amenity, comfort and functionality of the street.
  • Feature artwork and programmable lighting to enhance nighttime tourism / visitation offering along the street.
  • New signalised pedestrian crossings at the Jetty Road and Moseley Street intersection, improving safety and accessibility.
  • Premium Juperana stone paving throughout the public realm, creating a cohesive and enduring streetscape character.
  • Expanded pedestrian-priority zones with road-level footpaths extending from Sussex Street through Moseley Street and along Colley Terrace.
  • Mountable kerbs and flexible street infrastructure that support events and place activation as well as car parking options.
  • Continuous, Disability Discrimination Act-compliant footpaths at key side street intersections, improving accessibility and pedestrian movement.

The design rebalances the street in favour of people while maintaining essential access for public transport, cyclists, service vehicles and deliveries. Through a carefully coordinated staging strategy, construction was accelerated and aligned with the State Government’s Tram Grade Separation Project, minimising disruption to businesses and the community while significantly reducing the overall delivery timeframe.

Through careful staging and stakeholder engagement, the project team maintained pedestrian and business access at all times throughout the construction phase. Now complete and open to the public, the renewed Jetty Road establishes a benchmark for main street revitalisation in South Australia. The project delivers a resilient, accessible, and welcoming civic environment that celebrates Glenelg’s coastal identity, supports economic vitality and creates an exceptional destination for generations to come.
