Sunshine Coast City Hall is a defining landmark within the emerging Maroochydore City Centre, establishing a civic and commercial heart for the Sunshine Coast Council. Its landscape is embedded in the architecture, extending from a shaded streetscape to a lush rooftop, with cascading, climbing and trailing planting connecting each level.
The landscape design draws on the form and character of the Glass House Mountains, translating ideas of gorges and escarpments into a series of distinct landscape typologies. These biophilic elements reinforce the architecture while grounding the project in the identity of the Sunshine Coast.
The landscape integrates with adjacent Foundation Square to create a welcoming public realm shaped by generous planting and shaded seating. Lush subtropical vegetation softens the urban setting, while locally sourced boulders define gathering spaces and mark key entries, referencing the geology of the Sunshine Coast.
The extensive on-structure landscape required close coordination with architects and engineers to achieve adequate soil depths for upper-level tree planting. Irrigation, access and maintenance were integrated early to support the landscape across the building and façade, ensuring long-term success.
Achieving a 5-Star Green Star rating and exceeding NABERS targets, the project enhances air quality, supports thermal comfort and promotes wellbeing, reflecting a future-focused vision for a greener, healthier Sunshine Coast city centre.
