The Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre precinct is a $449 million purpose-built convention and event space, delivered as a partnership between Development Victoria, Regional Development Victoria, Plenary Conventions including Plenary Group, Built as the builder, Woods Bagot as architect and Tract as landscape architect.
The precinct incorporates a 1000 seat venue, exhibition spaces, meeting rooms, conference facilities and flexible event spaces and will also be home to retail and food and beverage offerings, a large public plaza that promises to become a feature of the Geelong waterfront and a 200-room hotel.
Geelong’s western beach cliffs are an important cultural and spiritual place for the Wadawurrung people, the Traditional Owners who have gathered in this place to share stories, trade, knowledge and celebrations for many generations.
The Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre precinct sees the return of community gatherings and celebrations of culture, transforming the existing car park site on Geelong’s waterfront, to a new convention and exhibition space.
The Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (WTOAC) gifted the name Nyaal Banyul to the precinct which means: ‘open your eyes to the hills.’ Chosen to reference the views from the site and encourage people take time to appreciate the landscapes of Wadawurrung Country.
Nyaal Banyul transforms Geelong’s waterfront into a culturally rich civic destination, where landscape-led public spaces, co-designed with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, connect people to Country through indigenous planting, local materials and enduring place-based storytelling.
The landscape design for the precinct integrates the surrounding public realm with the urban fabric of central Geelong providing welcoming and activated spaces, layered with cultural and historical attributes.
An indigenous planting palette and material selections, developed through the co-design process with WTOAC, references the Geelong regions landscapes and creates an identifiable character related to place.
