Following our involvement with Swinburne University of Technology on the Urban Design Framework for the Hawthorn campus, Tract partnered with Kosloff Architects and key stakeholders to design the landscape and external spaces surrounding the LateLab building.

This comprehensive revitalisation transforms the former Student Union building and incorporates the functions of the original Late Lab, previously a temporary but high-demand 24-hour hub and informal gathering space, into this cornerstone of the evolving Campus Heart.

Extensive engagement with students and staff guided the design process, ensuring a strong emphasis on accessibility, connectivity, inclusivity, and safety. Simultaneously, the planting strategy was developed to reflect both the site’s cultural context and ecological considerations, enhancing comfort and biodiversity. An elevated biophilic plaza and multiple seating areas, anchored by an existing retained tree and framed by linear planting beds along the western frontage, create a welcoming and dynamic entrance.

The café interface strengthens activation and permeability, fostering interaction between the building and its surroundings. Careful grading and interface management allow for the preservation of significant existing trees while integrating passive watering systems to support native plantings which contribute to improved biodiversity and create a tranquil environment amid the fast-paced campus setting.

Separation of general pedestrian circulation through John Street and the central gathering space enhances wayfinding and student experience in the eastern campus precinct.

Additionally, flexible outdoor spaces extending from the upper floors provide access to natural light and fresh air, supporting both individual study and collaborative work. Purpose-built furniture, Wi-Fi, and power connections enable versatile engagement, while elevated vantage points offer expansive views across the campus and beyond.
