Public realm expertise

We recognise that public projects are complex, and embrace not only the physical, but also the social, environmental and temporal qualities of each brief to create places that last.

Our public realm projects vary in scale, functionality and context yet all share a commitment to high quality human-centred design that stands the test of time.

Thoughtfully considered, we shape environments that are adaptive to changing community needs. We support the foundation for vibrant urban life, creating places where people want to be.

We embed environmentally responsive principles, evaluation tools, methodologies and advocacy throughout all project phases, considering impacts beyond the immediate site.

We evaluate embodied carbon in materials, measure life-cycle impacts of our designs and select plant species for climate resilience.

We recognise the spatial impacts that will come with the modal evolution of personal, commercial and public transportation.

With the continued shift towards making cities ‘smarter’, we consider the rapidly increasing pace of technological innovation, and how our urban environments and public spaces will need to adapt.

Our team apply research-driven design techniques that support public wellbeing, such as:

  • Understanding how spatial and circulation patterns can help manage, support and protect community health.
  • Integrating salutogenic landscape outcomes for public wellbeing and psychological recovery.
  • Understanding the complexities of food systems and opportunities for decentralised urban agriculture in public projects.

We recognise that every place is unique, and so is its community. Considered and responsive engagement is key to understanding what makes places work, and what people need.

Our engagement approach and strategies are designed carefully to each project context, guided by IAP2 principles to ensure engagement is authentic, meaningful, rigorous and captures insights that genuinely support project outcomes.

A critical part of our role is to understand place deeply, and to support connection with Country in a way that meaningfully informs our projects.

We promote the following principles in our Public Realm projects:

  • Early engagement with First Nations people in our projects utilising appropriate systems and procedures.
  • Respectful development in accordance with Caring for Country principles.
  • Working with cultural advisors to lead and coordinate meaningful engagement and relationship-building.
  • Commissioning local First Nations artists to provide genuine cultural insights to place.
