The West Gate Tunnel is one of Victoria’s largest and most complex infrastructure projects, providing an alternative route to the West Gate Bridge.
Opening in December 2025, twin tunnels now connect the West Gate Freeway to Docklands, North Melbourne and CityLink. The new 4-kilometre outbound tunnel is to be known as Eureka Tunnel – a symbol of the Australian worker – and the new 2.8km inbound tunnel to be called Bundawanh Tunnel – meaning “she dug” in the language of the Bunurong people.
A partnership between the Victorian Government West Gate Tunnel Authority and Transurban, the project has been constructed by a joint venture between CPB and John Holland, with Wood Marsh leading Architecture and Urban Design, and Engineering led by a joint a venture between Aurecon and Jacobs.
Tract led the landscape design and delivery in collaboration with Wood Marsh, which includes 14km of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths and almost 9 hectares of new parks and wetlands.
Along the network of trails and opens spaces, Tract has collaborated closely with a number of indigenous artists, whose work reflects the stories and connection to Country of First Nations peoples including the Bunurong and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung.
More than just a road, the project will connect Melbourne’s west and provide significant new open and green space for communities along the project corridor, including improved landscaping along the Maribyrnong River and Kororoit, Stony and Moonee Ponds creeks.
The landscape design is integral to the technical engineering outcomes of the project, while improving ecological and residential amenity.
Implementing Water Sensitive Urban Design strategies, new wetlands are used to treat stormwater in conjunction with planting to rehabilitate creek banks, managing the health of nearby waterways.
In addition to retaining existing trees, the project includes more than 17,000 trees and tens of thousands of native and indigenous shrubs and grasses, improving biodiversity and supporting animal habitat.
A BMX pump track under CityLink offers a new outdoor recreation facility for the community, near the entrance to the recently completed dedicated veloway – safely connecting Moonee Ponds Creek to Footscray Road. The Federation Trail has also been extended to connect the path network to Fogarty Ave in Yarraville, over Williamstown Road and to the Capital City Trail via a series of new bridges.
The West Gate Tunnel officially opened to drivers in December 2025, with further stages of work to be completed through 2026.
