The new Smiths Park community boasts numerous open spaces with opportunities for passive and active recreation. This includes two 1ha reserves at the estate's entry, generous streetscape boulevards, the Cardinia Creek Conservation Reserve and a utilities easement with extensive shared path network, equestrian trails, and wetlands.
The ‘Rocket Ship Park’ provides a variety of play options including a large sand pit with shade sail, numerous swings, in-ground trampolines, spinners, seesaw, and ‘shop’ cubby house. The central bespoke play structure takes the form of a rocket ship that has crashed into the playground. It includes a large enclosed spiral slide and rope net connected to an adjacent play mound.
The ‘Forest Park’ takes its inspiration from the Australian landscape, exploring the typologies of Forest, Desert and Riparian zones through the use of colour, materials and plant selection. A scooter loop links the various areas within the reserve taking the user from the ‘Forest Log’ play tower, past a meandering river water channel and blue soft fall rubber and up to the boulder escarpment with mound slide. The park also features picnic and BBQ facilities, a fitness node with half basketball court and junior skate elements.
Tract worked closely with the City of Casey to negotiate approvals for the reserves and open spaces that considered both Council’s tight parameters and the clients’ expected timeframes and budgets.
