Cumberland City Council engaged Tract Consultants to lead master planning, design, and documentation for the upgrade of Civic Park and the adjoining Pendle Creek waterway.
A much loved and well used park, the new upgrades rationalises the space which had a history of ad hoc additions. The revitalised parkland delivers a range of spaces for recreation, contemplation, play, exercise, socialising and gathering and carefully graded accessible pathways that form the circulation network within the landscape.
The layout is restructured to create a generous central village green edged by a significant accessible playground with a separate nature play zone. Existing elements such as the Maltese memorial, tennis courts and carparks have been seamlessly incorporated into the design.
Existing mature trees are retained throughout to form a welcome and shady setting. Pendle Creek wetland is revitalised with creek rehabilitation, to rejuvenate the wetland corridor and forms an important link in the local blue and green grid. Two new pedestrian bridges cross the wetland, improve park access to/from the town centre and train station.
Responding to the community’s voice, new BBQs and picnic table shelters have been strategically located for views and privacy and to cater for groups of various sizes. There is an abundance of options for gathering spaces across the park, with plenty of space for organised events to take place.
