Buxton Park Yarrabilba, located in The Retreat development, boasts eight hectares of open space to explore. Located within a priority development corridor at Yarrabilba, a suburb around 60 kilometres south of Brisbane, the area has experienced significant growth in recent years.

The district park needed to offer diverse community experiences. Its thoughtful layout encourages exploration and discovery, providing opportunities for residents to connect with nature, place and setting.

The park includes a wetland area that not only performs important flood and stormwater functions for the local catchment, but also provides habitats for various bird, reptile and amphibian species.

Bird-hide shelters on the water’s edge and sensitive bushland vegetation offer opportunities for community education and engagement with the local environment, fostering a deeper appreciation for nature.

The centrepiece of the parklands is a bespoke and uniquely distinct playground, designed to spark children’s imagination and physical activity. Unique features like The Caterpillar mounds provide opportunities to run, climb, bounce and scramble in a non-traditional play environment.

The repetitious and rolling mounds frame the playground space, provide a highly distinct and recognisable park feature, and encourage children to engage in motor and physical development skills.

The park also boasts several kilometres of walking paths, a dog off-leash area, a state-of-the-art outdoor gym, shelters and amenities. These facilities enable a wide range of recreational activities, encouraging socialisation and healthy living among residents.

Throughout the park, educational signage highlights key natural features, providing opportunities for visitors to learn about the environment while enjoying the open space.
