Sport is a vital part of community life, and the Ballarat Major Sports Precinct (which includes a Mars Stadium upgrade and the new home to Ballarat Athletics) plays a key role in supporting both elite and local participation.
Originally earmarked as a venue for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the project has since shifted focus to deliver a long-term legacy upgrade for the region.
Tract was engaged by COX architecture to lead the landscape architecture design from masterplanning, through to documentation and construction for the precinct upgrade. Ensuring a cohesive and enduring public realm that supports high performance athletics while enhancing the everyday experience for spectators, athletes, and the broader community.
The scope of works brings together an international standard athletics track with a series of thoughtful public realm upgrades, including enhanced pedestrian links, spectator embankments, and welcoming forecourt areas. Central to the design approach was the creation of tree lined pathways and seamless connections between the surrounding parklands and stadium entries, all contributing to a more accessible and inclusive spectator experience.
In collaboration with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners, the project integrates cultural heritage into the landscape. Two yarning circles have been incorporated into the design, providing spaces for storytelling, reflection, and community gathering, honouring the enduring connection of the Wadawurrung people to the land.
A refined planting palette featuring resilient native species frames the stadium edge and softens the geometry of the athletics precinct. Generous terraces and defined edges provide clear orientation and elevated viewing opportunities, supporting large events without compromising everyday usability.
While the Commonwealth Games may not be proceeding, the commitment to delivering a high-quality athletics precinct remains unchanged. The current construction phase will ensure MARS Stadium continues to attract major events while delivering a valuable and lasting amenity for the Ballarat community.
This project reflects the adaptability of design thinking in the face of shifting priorities, maintaining ambition, quality, and long-term benefit at its core.
