Acacia Estate is a masterplanned greenfield residential development in the new suburb of Botanic Ridge that successfully combines community, heritage, and environmental sustainability within the public realm.
Tract initially developed a comprehensive theming document that took inspiration from the estate’s namesake to weave a cohesive
narrative between the landscape, open spaces and ecological features such as the wetland and drainage channel.
As a result, acacias have influenced the planting palette, material selection and also formed the basis for the impressive sculpture that welcomes visitors to the estate.
The neighbouring Cranbourne Botanic Gardens are one of Melbourne’s last strongholds for the endangered Southern Brown Bandicoots and special
consideration given to designing culverts beneath roadways to provide uninterrupted connections for these marsupials across the estate.
A planted open stormwater channel acts as a significant corridor between the Botanic Gardens and other remnant vegetation that has been retained and protected as part of a conservation area.
The local heritage plays a key role with both Indigenous and recent history being represented within the open space reserves. Aboriginal artefacts found across the site point to the area’s significance to the Bunurong people who were consulted as part of the design process and gave input into interpretive signage that highlighted plants of particular importance to their traditions. In contrast, the Homestead Reserve incorporates formal garden design features and an exotic planting palette to evoke an aesthetic in keeping with the original farmstead.
