Tract Consultants were engaged to design and document the surrounding landscape to the main place of Catholic worship within Canberra: St. Christopher’s Cathedral – located to the South of Manuka Oval on Canberra Avenue.
The extensive redevelopment of the site included the demolition of existing buildings and construction of a car park underneath a three storey administration building and a five story medium density residential building containing forty four apartments.
The challenge for this multi-million dollar project was developing a contemporary yet sympathetic, respectful as well as sophisticated, response to the heritage values of the existing cathedral, whilst balancing a significant level shift across the site and creating a variety of new multipurpose spaces on structure.
The predominantly urban landscape complements the cathedral by reflecting the colours and texture of its external façade within the pavement. The pattern language established within the urban fabric of the landscape envelops and connects the surrounding contemporary buildings with the historic cathedral whilst celebrating the heritage aspects of the site.
