Tract Consultants were engaged by BECK Property Group to develop a landscape scheme for Riverwood; the multi-story residential development located on the banks of the Yarra River in Alphington.
The complete site supports a number valuable existing River Red Gums and mature Spotted Gums. The retention of these has played a prominent role in defining the layout of the overall site. Vehicle circulation through the site is via a shareway pedestrian priority road, with permeable paving to encourage health and wellbeing of the trees. The understorey treatments of selected indigenous shrubs and groundcovers allow the revegetated escarpment to merge seamlessly into the development, maintaining important ecological and habitat values and links.
The spaces between have been carefully considered and provide shared landscape areas that further reinforce the garden character of the development.
The palette of materials adopted for the paved areas combines exposed aggregate concrete, timber, stone and permeable paving. The naturalistic colour palette of these materials is be sympathetic to the river environs and softens the hard edge interface with the adjacent planting forms.
WSUD strategies have been integrated into the development, and these include the introduction of rain gardens, stormwater treatment facilities and areas of permeable paving.
