Major Projects Victoria have committed to upgrading Melbourne Park, the home of the Australian Open (Tennis Grand Slam), to maintain its position as a world class venue. As part of that commitment Tract was invited to join Jackson Architecture and Watpac Construction as part of their design and construction team to develop the Melbourne Park Eastern Plaza.
The landscape component of the project is centred upon a large plaza that forms a majestic entrance to the Hisense Arena. Tract designed a colonnade of phoenix palms that encloses a stone paved and dynamic space. The palms reflect the existing avenue of plams to the far eastern end of the site.
This high quality square is connected by a series of bespoke timber ramps to the new National Tennis Centre and 12 outdoor tennis courts. All elements are linked by native trees and under storey planting that provides a gardenesque atmosphere. These plantings not only create a uniquely Australian setting for this world tennis event but link the project to the wider parkland that surrounds Melbourne’s sporting precinct.
