Rethinking the Strip – The Story Continues_____

Rethinking the Strip – The Story Continues

Tract's 2014 'Rethinking the Strip' Forum broke new ground, literally starting a new conversation about the streets of Australia, on the streets of Melbourne.

In October 2014, Tract Consultants' entire national staff gathered at Lennox Street, Richmond for the start of a three day ideas forum to explore a critical planning and design issue; the decline of traditional strip shopping precincts.

The Forum was informed by a research and teaching partnership with The University of Melbourne's Melbourne School of Design; the students' primary laboratory was the iconic Bridge Road at Richmond.

Representatives of various private and public sector organisations, in addition to members of the local community, joined Tract staff in actively participating in Forum activities and sessions.
Following on from their involvement in the Forum, representatives of Bridge Rd Main Street Inc, sought further assistance from Tract with preparation of a streetscape study for that part of Bridge Road between Punt Road / Hoddle Street and Church Street.

The study process identified a series of proposed improvement opportunities for the 'Richmond Hill' precinct, as illustrated on the attached summary diagram.

The study outcomes are directed to the key stakeholders: the City of Yarra, VicRoads and Yarra Trams, in terms of opportunities for physical improvements to and associated revitalisation of the Richmond Hill precinct.
