Is Crace The Happiest Suburb In The World?

Is Crace the worlds happiest suburb?

A team of University of Canberra academics is about to find out.

"The Crace Study" will consider whether the communal design of the new northern suburb will have long-term benefits for residents' health and wellbeing.

Tract's Masterplan for the Crace residential community has moved away from a traditional "one size fits all” approach that has led to so many dull, services authority dominated suburbs in Canberra.

From the original competition winning design in 2007 and throughout the detailed design, documentation and final implementation, Tract and our supportive client (CIC Australia) has stayed true to the original design intent, battling in the face of major resistance to design a community that is tailored first and foremost to residents needs rather than for the convenience of authorities and service providers.
Tract’s George Gallagher, Director of Landscape Architecture, reflects on the process.

"It was actually something of a 'Back to the Future' approach involving the application of proven design principles etc.

The real key to the success of the project was not allowing the design intent to be eroded throughout the implementation process as is so often the case, especially here in Canberra.

Our team, especially Carl Nugent, had to ride shotgun throughout the whole process, to resist and resolve the relentless tide of mundane engineering , construction, and authority matters that continually threatened to ‘dumb down’ the design during the staged, five year delivery process".
